Wand Guide
The qualities described in the posts below are merely guidelines if you experience issues with figuring out how your wand should look/feel and which qualities it should posses. This is merely supposed to be a guide, not particularly strict or something we would ever reject an application for. Feel free to be creative with your wands!

Length, Strength, Surface and Shape:
Length:
The wand is from 7-14 inches. The shorter the wand, the less flexible/tolerant the owner will be.
Wood Strength:
Pliable: Transfiguration. Easy-going but strong-willed. Swishy: Charms. Playful but weak-willed. Rigid: Defensive Magic. Headstrong and unyielding. Springy: Charms. Energetic disposition and friendly. Inflexible: Hexes and Curses. Willful disposition and doesn't back down. Bendy: Divination. Flexible nature, open to new ideas and knowledge. Brittle: Dark Magic. Insecurity, lack of self-confidence or lust for power. Supple: Good for protective and defensive magic. Kind and protective.
Wood Surface and Shape:
Knobby: Earthy and Strong. Smooth: Calm and Collected, Image minded. Spiraled Shaft: Quick witted and Open-Minded Bent Shaft: Quirky and Entertaining. Decorated Shaft: Image/beauty Minded, Usually Ambitious.

Cores:
Common Cores: Most common cores. Ollivander uses only these three.
Phoenix Feather: Great for all sorts of spells, but especially defensive Magic. Unicorn Tail Hair: Great for charms. Usually chooses the pure of heart. Dragon Heartstring: Particularly great for flamboyant spells, hexes and curses, learns quickly, they tend to be easy to turn to the Dark Arts if the owner wishes it. Temperamental, powerful, can be extremely dangerous if it's combined with certain woods.
Other Cores: Less Common, but still available
Demiguise Hair: Transfiguration Hippogriff Talon: Charms Runespoor Fang: Dark Magic Hair from the Mane of a Kelpie: Excellent for all Wandwork Ashwinder Ash: Protection Charms
Specialty Cores: Either very rare, or can only be passed down through family.
Chimera Scale: Rare and extremely Powerful. Leprechaun Hair: Temperamental to the Non-Irish. Useful for luck and money charms. Veela Hair: Extremely temperamental, volatile to non-Veelas. Transfiguration. Fairy Hair: Good for charms, especially love and beauty charms.
